Introducing the king of fermenter humpers....
Asshole but my dad called me Warrick.
Do you have a nickname and what is it?
How long have you been brewing?
How did you get into brewing?
My best mate and I always used to talk about brewing cheap beer when we were younger. Bath tub beer is what we called it. 20 years later I was filming an interview with a guy who claimed to be a brewer at SAB. He told me anyone could make beer at home if they could control temperature. It was then that I started researching Craft beer and found BEERBROS. I am now Broke!
How many brews have you done?
I have no idea! Probably around 70, feels like hundreds
3 tier old school authentic
What is your favorite step when brewing and why?
Creating the recipe is my favorite part of brewing because it’s the creative part. I feel one day when I master this step I will be able to become a Master at brewing.
What is your least favorite step when brewing and why?
Cleaning is a pain, after a great day’s brewing you still left with a lot of cleaning. I always tell my wife its 10% brewing beer and 90% cleaning. I clean before and after every brew.
What’s your favorite style of beer to brew and why?
Citra, Southern Passion, Galaxy, Lemon Drop, Simcoe
Mangrove jack m44 US West Coast
Best beer you have ever had?
Goose IPA on Tap and Oakham Citra bottle
Whats your choice of pouring?
Have you ever had a 'bottle bomb'?
Do you brew strictly to a recipe or do you tend to do your own thing?
I create make own recipes that I follow, I have never 100% followed a recipe from a book or the web.
Are you pedantic about keeping records of everything you do?
In the Last 2 years, I have started writing everything down. I have a dedicated book where I hand write every recipe. I doubt anyone other than me would be able to make any sense of it. I am able to make more consistent beer because of my notes.
Favorite piece of equipment?
Fermentors! ...drops the mic...
What is the biggest lesson you ever learnt about brewing?
Don't Drink and Brew. Brew then Drink! Most the mistakes I have made in the past have been because I was sampling beers during the brew.
Has being a member of Durban Home Brewers had any influence on your brewing?
I have made a lot of great friends through DHB. I have learned from everyone by studying their systems and seeing how they brew.

Last meeting:
Was our first Saturday meeting. It ended up a bit bi-polar. Half the guys were at Bros Shop while the others were at Union Square. The swap meet at Beer Bros was well supported and some guys walked away with cool gear at good prices. Thanks Claire, Scott and Brad for organising. The vibe at Union Square was horrific as it was Halloween, ha ha. Quite a few of us snapped up the bargain of the day, a Camelthorn brew with an Ostrich burger for a mere R 40.00 Was so good a deal some of us had 2. Great time was had by all.

Next meeting:
We are back to Nguni and I for one am looking forward to this meeting. Always a great event. Awesome brewery, better beer, always social. Not forgetting Seth will be judging the latest challenge, the SMASH brew with a difference.
Its happening this week on Wednesday, 21 November. 5pm to 9pm. Bring your tjop and dop. If you need it bring it, in other words, serious self catering. Don't forget some cash for a brew or two and extra beers for swaps.
Please try to be there, it's always good to have a decent crowd, besides you need to get out more.

Brewer of the year:
As you should know, we are using the BTS competitions to decide on our brewer of the year, kinda like "brew league". Anyway, how it works is each brewers best 3 BTS scores (out of 4 comps) are added up to give them a total score. Highest score is brewer of the year. Here are the top 10 currently:

Support a good cause by drinking beer.
Yep, you read it right, support a worthy cause by drinking beer. Its what we do anyway, drink beer, but how you ask?? Easy, next time you are Tops in Hillcrest (only available here) look out for the new brew '36 on Main' It is labeled as a blond, but its more of an amber, but that's not the point. We (some of the committee) tried it last Saturday and its goooood. Similar to a Darling Native. Only R 29.00 per 440 ml.
So whats the story behind this brew? Well.... a while back Mike from Tops and Trevor from 1000 Hills Chef School were chatting over a coffee. Needless to say, the conversation turned to beer and how could they give back through their collective resources. One thing led to another and '36 on Main' was born. So, Trevor and Mike have brewed this great beer at Trevor's Brewery at 1000 Hills Chef School and Mike is selling it at Tops at Spar Hillcrest. Now the best part is that all profits received from the sales of this great beer will go towards a scholarship to put a youngster from the local community in the valley through chef school availing them a life changing opportunity to set the course for the rest of their life. We can do our bit to assist by buying lots of these great beers and enjoying them, knowing with each sip, we are changing someones life for the good forever. So go on, be a good oke and buy some, they are yum.
