What a year it has been! As 2019 draws to a much-needed end, this constitutes the last of my “From the Chair” contributions.
|
First off, just a massive thanks to everyone who has been involved in the club from its inception and to those who are yet to get involved. Honestly, this has been one of the best periods of my life and I am proud to have served with all the other committee members to keep the wheels turning!
|
Next up, November 30th was the final iteration of the monthly meets and culminated in a year-end bash of note! What a great turnout at YNG GNS brewery in Assegai. That Pale Ale of theirs has “award” written all over it. We got to socialize, meet wives, partners and kids who so often don’t get to feature in the brew club narrative! Congratulations to Sam and James for what they have done with the spot thus far! Great tunes (for the most part) and a chilled day saw a ton of braaing amongst the handover of awards for Brewer of the Year, Best Brew Name, Brew to Style and Challenge Series.
|
With the day drawing to a close, after years of dedicated service the long-standing committee, who have for the most part, elected not to be re-elected, began to disband like soldiers demobbed and reverted back to being home brewers for the sake of home brewing!
|
Indeed, the time has come to pass the paddle and step aside, with new elements stepping up to make for the best possible chemistry! New captains are at the wheel, breathing into this home-brew club new life, ideas and strategies! They’ll have to mill the grist to get the best possible ferment from the year to come, but we have no doubt that they’ll do just that!
|
All the best for the new committee and once more thanks to all of the guys and girls of DHB for every part they continue to play, from advice to thoughtful questions; from supply of goods to lending their taste buds; for putting up with politics and for staying the course!
|
Have a safe festive season everyone! Drink and eat much, make summer-bodies a problem for 2020!

Adrian: So, the time has come for me to step down, but the newsletter is being handed over to Sir Jeff Jenkinson who I am sure will do a great job of keeping you up to date with what is happening, what's new and other interesting Brew News.

I am sure Jeff will bring his own style and personality to the newsletter, what say you?

I have some big shoes to fill. Like many other members the DHB newsletter is something I look forward to finding in my mailbox every month. As for style and personality, I don't think I could authentically capture Adrians wit and charm. Like a brewer souring his mash by bathing in it, this newsletter has become an extention of Adrian himself; quirky, entertaining and chock-full of bacteria... uh... great information. Like a good little brewer's apprentice I will try my best to stick to the recipe and keep it consistent, informative and entertaining.

Last meet:
|
Was held at Young Guns. Busy meeting with loads happening. Huge thanks to Sam and James Clark frm YNG GNS fr hstng s nd fr spplyng bttmlss brs fr nly R100. Challenge Series final judging and announcing, Final Bts for the year winners, plus brewer of the year, best scoring beer of the year and best beer name of the year. Doug organised for a herd of sheep to be slaughtered for the braai and 14km of boerie (which he single-handedly cooked too) and a farm was depleted to provide salads. Even Warrick could not fit more in. Thanks Dough and missus Doug for organising EVERYTHING!! That curried beans salad was Groovylicious.

Last Challenge series for 2019 was Wood Aged
|
Judged at the last meet for the year at Young Guns meeting. only 5 beers were entered. I tried the Guava IPA that other Dave Harrison entered... YOH, amazing!!
|
|

Second place was Ettienne's Wee Heavy with a Oak twist and the winner is/was: Justin Kiffness Clark's Wood Aged IPA
|

|
Adrian Ryley's son commented: "Mommy, is that a MAN!!!" As Kiffness released his locks to flow in the breeze. WTF Ryan?? That beard will never compete with Kiffness' locks and as for those shorts, Kaylene, no!
|
|
|

Pull in for a bite to eat and a few cold ones. There is always great beer on tap and other liquids for the non beer drinkers. Or, if you are not in the area, stop in at you local Tops and grab a few of our brews to enjoy at home around a braai or with a good book or in the bath, whatever blows your hair back.

Just know, whatever you do it will always be better with a brew from THAT Brewing Co.

BEER BROS BTS 2019:
Kan jy no wel glo... its over, gone, done and dusted. The final comp of the year was the IPA, APA etc comp. Plenty entries as usual, close calls on the scoring, but there can only be one winner...

Brewer Of the Year Contest.
|
This could not have been closer. First and second place were separated by a mere .12 points. Congrats to Adrian Garr... sorry, Ryley for scrapping in with a total score of 112.38 points Ryan Swart was in second place with 112.26 points. Greg Hardie secured Third place quite comfortably. Well done to those of you who stuck to your guns through the year. You will notice that there are only 3 scores per brewer as their lowest scores have been dropped in line with the competition rules.

Fools and Fans
|
|
Fools & Fans is fast becoming South Africa’s most sort after craft festival and this year they’re introducing a day strictly for home brewers from around the country. To participate you’ll need to donate & pour a batch of brew at the event in Greyton (Western Cape) on 3rd April. Pledgers will receive free entry to the event and camping.
|
|
We are exploring some options to get down there, but first we need to know if any brewers are interested in joining us on this exciting beer advenure. If you are interested please get in touch with Warren or drop us an email.

Clarens Beer Fest
|
Possibly the better beer fest on the calendar and great way to kick off what could be a great beer year: "2020 marks the celebration of our 10th anniversary of this countries most beautiful beers. The festival takes place on the village square, set in the heart of Clarens. Here you will be able to enjoy an incredible selection of beers from across our amazing country, you will be able to kick back and relax in the foot hills of the mighty Maluti's and enjoy the sweet sounds of some of South Africa's most rocking bands."

A note from the new committee
First and foremost we would like to thank the previous committee members for your immeasurable contributions to this club. A lot of you have been long standing members of the committee sinking dozens of hours of your personal time each month (time that could have been spent brewing 😱) in the service of the DHB. We would like to raise a fully charged glass of sweet golden nectar in your honor 🍻. This club wouldn't be where it is today without your efforts, thank you.

Like any new leadership, the new committee is running in blind and wet behind the ears, cock-sure, full of energy and ideas and not yet tainted by time and experience. We are determined to grab the mash-paddle with both hands and make our own mark on this wonderful community.
|
Our first big announcement for 2020: no fees. That's right, membership this year is free. All you have to do is sign up via the website in January and you can join us in the exclusive members only WhatsApp group, gain access to our super secret Dropbox folder full of great recipes and resources and enjoy 1 free Brew To Style entry for 2020. We will also be doing shirts as a paid extra for those in need of some flashy new threads.
