Message from the committee

Nah, nothing to report that's relevant.

Join the Committee

The committee is always in need of extra hands. We would love to do more stuff but this is a part time gig for all of us and the only way we can make that happen is if we have some extra hands to share the load. If you want to help out, or you would like to nominate somebody please reply to this email and let me know.

🤝 Next Meet

That will be Ales For Tails. Replaces August meet, but who knows, what this space...

BeerBros BTS Challenge #3 Results- Dark beer

I believe the entries for this comp were flippin awesome and it was a pretty close call in the end, but there can be only one winner. Only 1.75 points between 1st and 7th from 17 entries. I helped prop up the lower end again.

Thanks again to Trevor of 1000 Hills Chef School for hosting us, and to the Judges for doing the hard work of rating some fantastic brews.
🥉 Third place Justin Clark - 'Peaky Brew' with a score of 35.66
🥈 Second place Would you believe it, Justin Clark - 'Vanilla Gorilla' scoring 36.00
🥇 First place Not for the first time, Angus Kerr - 'Flavabomb' with 36.75 points.

🏆 Brewer of the Year Scorecard

Every year we award our most successful brewer with the HIGHLY coveted Brewer Of The Year title. Its a big deal, there is a trophy and everything. Scores are calculated by adding up your top 3 BTS scores over the course of the year, so you need to participate in at least 3 BTS competitions to be in the running.

We Need your senses

Actually we are offering for you to put a few of them to good use. Which ones?? Sight, smell and taste. You could throw in touch and hearing, but it might get messy.

What for you may well ask?? Judging the BTS #3: Belgians on 03 September. From 10 am to around 2pm. AND you get pizza!!

'Why me!' you may ask again. Well, why not, you brew beer, you enjoy beer, you probably give your opinion on beer already (admit it, we all do!!). Imagine 8 or 9 Belgian beers lined up ready for you to rate them and you don't have to pay for them. Imagine doing this with the guidance of experienced brewers and the BJCP guide. You will be amazed at what you will learn and how much your 'beer tasting' skills will improve. You don't need experience, but you will gain loads. 9 Belgian brews will cost you at least R500. (plus the pizza, R100 at least), what do you have to loose?? Sorry, but you don't actually drink all the beer, that's why its called 'tasting'.

If I have convinced you, contact Justin 'the Kiffness' Clark on 082 569 6668 OR reply to this mail NOW.

It will be Weird, it will be Wild and it will be Wonderful, but only if you attend.

This year Africa Brew takes place in Clarens.... Vrystaaaaaaat.
Awesome brew people gather to talk and enjoy craft beer. Huge info to be learnt from extremely talented presenters (some are doctors, nogals!)
Brew comp open to attendees only - amazing prizes, last years winner walked away with about R 10K worth of first prize. Second and third place were also pretty awesome. The website will be live soon, but you can book your tickets now, here!

Join their facebrick page to keep up to date with what's happening. The date is always the first weekend in November, has always been and they plan to keep it that way. Diarise now. Africa Brew - Brewers Unite is organised by our own Megan Gemmell and her maatjies.

Fools and Fans 6

Ok, I know its the F&F5 logo, but they have not yet put the F&F6 one out yet. We are already planning our club entry for next years event. The style: Saison. If you have a great recipe for a stunning Saison or if you want to be part of the planning/ R&D team for our entry for next year, contact Justin 'the Kiffness' Clark on 082 569 6668. Or you can contact me by return mail.

What is Fools and Fans? Its an awesome small scale beer experience held on a large scale in Greyton in the Western Cape every year. Who attends? Awesome brewy people from across Mnzansi. Loads to learn, loads to taste, awesome people to meet, huge fun to be had. A must if you take craft brewing seriously or just for fun. Check out their past events on the website here. Normally held around April each year.

Top Brewing Tip

Be prepared, scouts honor:

Prep well in advanced. Purchase all the ingredients, consumables and equipment you will need, before you set your brew date. Check the batteries for your scale, PH meter and thermometers (If you have). Make a list of everything you will need on brew day.
The day before brewing, check again that you have everything, examine and clean all your equipment. Do what you can in advance, like filling urns / kettles with the correct volume of water. Add you water chemistry. Mill your grain. Measure off your hops and move to the fridge with your yeast. Get your yeast starter going (if you do a starter) Put sanitiser in your fermenter. Check the load shedding schedule, best to plan around levels 2 and 4. Place as much equipment as you can where you need it. On brew day, double check again that everything is there before you start. Make sure you have a check list for each step and process and tick off as you go. Run through the process in you head, backwards (best way to find errors). Your brew day SHOULD run smoothly.
Do the same for bottling day.

Nothing is worse than getting started and then realizing you only have half of what need and then need to go on the bum at 7am on a Sunday when everyone else is still sleeping off Saturday nights reveling. You cocked it up, not us, because you were not prepared, scouts honor!!
