Brew News

Eish, I can't believe, winter she is almost here. Time for stouts, bocks, porters, imperials Dunkels, schwarbier and wholesome food and for me, probably gout, but that's a story for another day.

Chairs chatter:
Craft Fest 2018 was a blur of chrome and CO2! An incredibly successful day for DHB and fundraising for Umduduzi Children's Hospice. We got damn close to R30 000 and would have surpassed that mark easily, if we hadn't tragically lost a few brews along the way! Tracey Brand from the charity expressed their effusive thanks and they were there on the day to help sell tokens and get that cash rolling in, hand-over-fist. According to Tracey: "The money will go towards our early childhood development programme at King Dinuzulu Hospital. The children there have drug-resistant TB and are hospitalized without their parents for a minimum of 6 months. Our programme ensures they receive life-skills as well as regular loves and cuddles." Such people we should all strive to emulate! Great job Umduduzi, keep it up!
|
The feedback on the day was astounding, with many comments overheard about the superior quality of the brews! One cannot forget or overlook the unique brewstands and dispensers presented by each brewer! As diverse as we all are!
|
Thanks so much to everyone for the effort you put in! It makes all the hard work worth every moment, when we all come together and pull a few pints for such a good cause! Go DHB!

Next Challenge:
Meneer Seth has set and you probably should have already brewed the next challenge for August, but here are the details:
|
May sound simple in theory, but a real challenge to get right. It’s easy to get the ingredients right for this style of beer, but getting the balance right and managing your yeast and fermentation will be key to your success in making a good Belgian tripel. Complex spicy, phenolic (in a good way), fruity and sweet flavours and aroma, with a large dense creamy head, these are great beers to sip and enjoy.
|
At 7.5-9.5% ABV, these beers have a natural alcoholic sweetness which will offset the higher hop levels normally used. You will have to use some sugar in this to keep the body low, preferably Belgian Candi Sugar (Bonus points for those who make their own). Watch your fermentation to control those higher fusel alcohols and hit the right flavour balance. Yeast is the star of the show with this style, so look after your little friends and they will do the job right. Brew this one early as the beer is best with a little more conditioning time.

Kloof SPCA Ales for Tails 2018
It’s that time of year again - the annual home brewers edition of Ales for Tails will be taking place on Saturday 30 June at Kloof SPCA. For anyone that doesn’t know - Ales for Tails (AFT) is an event that Durban Homebrewers have been involved with for 3 years now where nearly R250k has been raised for a variety of animal shelters. Brewers pledge their preferred alcoholic beverage and pour it on the day and money is made through ticket & drink sales. Last year an amazing R132k was raised. Attendees enjoy a day of tasting our unique home brews while being entertained by some of the area's finest bands. The 2 previous events have been sold out and it is gaining popularity.
|
Although there are a couple other events planned for the year the committee and I are encouraging brewers to prioritise support for the Kloof SPCA event. Each brew will be given an entry ticket with an event-branded glass, cap and t-shirt (not him!). Each pledge of 18l has the potential to make about R1600 for the charity. You don’t have to be at the event to pledge - a pourer can be arranged.
|
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the committee and all the brewers for your support in the past and with the upcoming event. This is a chance for us to make a difference for those that can’t help themselves.
|
Looking forward to spending a great day with everyone!

Next Brew To Style:
Our next BTS challenge is Stouts and Porters. Yum, possibly the best beer style where you can get very creative and the brew can be very forgiving. But don't leave it too late as darker brews need time to mature. Judging will be 09 June and the winners will be announced at the BTS meeting at the German Club in Westville - currently planned for 13 June 2018.
